(HPV) Human papillomavirus DNA test

Available only in our partnering clinic in Malta

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a small DNA virus that commonly infects human cutaneous and mucosal epithelial cells. There are over 150 types of HPV and only a small number of types (ie. high-risk HPV) cause problems by changing cells from normal to abnormal. Our HPV DNA test is used to check for high-risk HPV infections in women.  Through a simple swab, the HPV DNA test looks for human papillomavirus genes in your cervical cells.

What are the causes of HPV infection?

Human Papillomavirus genital infection is one of the most frequent sexually transmitted diseases.  With much lower frequency, the infection can be originated by contact with surfaces previously used by infection carriers (such as public toilets, swimming pools).

What are the symptoms of HPV infection?

Symptoms of Human Papillomavirus vary according to the type of infection. Most types of HPV are symptomless. They usually clear up on their own without leading to future complications. Low-risk types of HPV, such as HPV 6 and 11, may cause genital warts in the vagina, cervix, and skin.

Some types of HPV can cause cervical cancer and other cancers. These are called high-risk types. High-risk HPV strains include HPV 16 and 18, which cause about 70% of cervical cancers. Other high-risk human papillomaviruses include 31, 33, 45, 52, 58, and a few others.

If the test is negative you have not contracted high-risk Human Papillomavirus (HPV). If the result is positive you have contracted high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) and you need to proceed with treatment.
